35+ Musicians With Crazy On-Stage Antics

As we all know, part of being a musician is putting on a performance. For some entertainers, that means nailing a snappy dance routine or executing a well-practiced drum solo. However, for others, being on stage is a great opportunity to take part in some really outlandish antics. Whether it’s smashing up an instrument, messing around with animals, or making an artistic statement, the artists on this list are no strangers to shock tactics and wild antics.
The Genitorturers’ Piercings
You might get a clue about this band’s onstage antics by looking more closely at their name. That’s right – members of the industrial metal band The Genitorturers are known for giving themselves “play piercings” while performing.

The band gets up to all sorts of strange activities when on stage. The bandmembers also call up volunteers from the audience to get piercings. The entertainers don’t like to be referred to as a Shock Rock band, arguing that “This is real, not an act.”
Pink Floyd’s Wall
One of psychedelic band Pink Floyd’s most well-known songs is “Another Brick in the Wall,” from 1979 album The Wall. Amusingly, while they were touring with this album, a giant wall was built in front of the band as they performed. This meant that fans couldn’t always see the band they’d paid to watch perform.

During the show, animations were projected onto the increasingly large wall, until eventually, it crashed down at the end. At this point, members of Pink Floyd weren’t exactly getting along.
Post Malone’s Busted Guitar
In 2017, rapper and singer Post Malone broke his guitar while on stage at a performance in Florida. The artist has said, “I like to break a lot of stuff on stage. I already broke my stage.

There’s a bunch of tables and chairs on stage and I already broke them all, so I need to go get some new ones, but it’s a lot of fun.” The “Rockstar” singer then tweeted delivery service Postmates to try and get “100 guitars to smash on tour.”
Tommy Lee’s Drum Rollercoaster
Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee wasn’t content with just playing his drums at the back of the stage. Nope. Instead, the legendary drummer performed his intense drum solos while riding around the arena in a drum rollercoaster. That’s right, a drum rollercoaster.

Lee started off with an elevated platform that turned 90°, and then graduated to one that made a full 360° turn. Eventually, the drum-coaster was born. Of course, it comes with its own issues – once Lee got stuck hanging upside down.
Ozzy Osbourne’s Bat
Perhaps one of the most popular figures of wild rock ‘n’ roll onstage antics is rocker Ozzy Osbourne. In 1981, The Black Sabbath lead singer signed his first solo record deal, and promptly bit the head off a dove that he had brought as a sign of peace.

Just one year later, a fan threw a bat at the rocker while he performed, and Osbourne proceeded to bite its head off too. Apparently, the singer was rushed to the hospital afterwards and treated for rabies.
Slipknot’s Dead Crow
Just as a head’s up — there are various musicians on this list who have engaged in absolutely disgusting onstage antics, and this is one of them. If you’re an animal lover, and a bird lover in particular, then go ahead and skip this one.

Heavy metal band Slipknot is known for its extreme activities. Drummer “Clown” once found a dead crow, kept it in a jar on stage, and then eventually threw the liquified remains of the creature onto the audience.
Sinead O’Connor’s Pope Picture
Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor has been involved in various controversial onstage antics. Back in 1992, the singer appeared on comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live and ripped up a photograph of Pope John Paul II.

This bold move was part of a protest against the Catholic church, but it caused a considerable amount of controversy. Actor Joe Pesci and singer Madonna both spoke out against the act, though O’Connor maintains that she doesn’t regret her actions one bit.
Lady Gaga’s Green Milk
More than just another popstar, Lady Gaga is known for her avant-garde approach to just about everything. After all, why wouldn’t a woman who wore a dress made out of meat also take that same sense of flair to the stage?

Back in 2014, the “Applause” singer performed at a SWSX concert and a woman vomited green liquid all over her. Apparently, the woman was a hired “vomit artist,” “vomit painter,” and personal friend who was hired by Gaga.
The Who’s Explosives
Of course, when it comes to wild onstage antics, we have to look to the rockers of the 1960s. English rock band The Who was known for destroying their instruments on stage, though one incident was particularly unforgettable.

The band planned to destroy their equipment after a 1967 performance, but they didn’t know that drummer Keith Moon had put 10 times the amount of explosives required into his bass drum. The resulting explosion led guitarist and singer Pete Townshend to lose his hearing in one ear.
Axl Rose’s Audience Brawl
Let’s stick with the rockers and turn to Guns N’ Roses lead singer Axl Rose. The singer and lyricist has a pretty terrible temper, which has caused him to lash out when on stage. When a fan tried to take a picture of him during a 1991 performance, the entertainer jumped into the crowd, took the camera, and punched some audience members.

As a result of this reckless behavior, the rocker was arrested and fined $50,000. On other occasions, the musician has destroyed equipment because of sound issues.
Alice Cooper’s Baby Dolls
Some musical acts take it further than just rock ‘n’ roll behavior and go full-on shock rock. Artist Alice Cooper has actually been named “The Godfather of Shock Rock” because of his wild onstage behavior. The entertainer has used reptiles, fake blood, baby dolls, guillotines and swords on stage.

Sadly, in 1969, the “School’s Out” singer released a live chicken from the stage and watched as the crowd dismembered it. For his part, the singer claimed he believed that the bird would fly.
Miley Cyrus’s Twerking
Popstar Miley Cyrus turned the world upside down when she appeared on stage at the MTV VMA awards in 2013. The singer had previously shocked audiences when she danced around a pole at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards, but this performance really sent people over the edge.

Doing her version of twerking while dressed in a latex body suit, the former Hannah Montana star danced along to controversial song “Blurred Lines.” Considering this isn’t animal abuse, we’re pretty on board with Miley’s version of wild antics.
Britney Spears’ Snake
You might notice that most controversial onstage antics on this list that are done by women aren’t exactly the worst behavior in the world. For some reason, female musicians tend to get a harder time when it comes to their onstage antics, even though they generally aren’t beating up their fans.

When Britney Spears emerged at the 2001 VMAs with a Burmese python draped around her neck, the world never forgot it. The reptile, named Banana, is seared into our collective memory.
Wayne Coyne’s Hamster Ball
Lead singer of psychedelic rock band The Flaming Lips, Wayne Coyne, came up with a great way of interacting with fans. During performances with large crowds, the musician descends from an alien mothership in a bubble and rolls around the audience.

As well as this, Coyne has poured fake blood on his face during shows as a tribute to iconic musician Miles Davis. In general, The Flaming Lips are known for their use of confetti cannons, lasers, and balloons.
Jimi Hendrix’ Flaming Guitar
Remember we mentioned that The Who were famous for destroying their instruments? Well, at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, The Who singer Pete Townshend verbally abused entertainer Jimi Hendrix and accused him of stealing his act.

This resulted in an argument of which act would perform first, with The Who ultimately winning. When he eventually got on stage, Jimi Hendrix poured lighter fluid onto his guitar and set it on fire. As a result, he was hospitalized for burns on his hands.
Madonna’s Onstage Kiss
The Queen of Pop has caused several controversies throughout her career, mainly for being a boundary-breaking female artist. In 2003, Madonna’s music video for “American Life” caused outrage due to its anti-war message in response to the USA’s 2003 invasion of Iraq.

That same year, the singer made headlines all over the world when she kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV Video Music Awards. Obviously, women kissing one another shouldn’t be headline news, but in this case, it absolutely was.
Jim Morrison’s Riot
Here’s another 1960s rocker that caused a huge scene based on their outlandish onstage antics. In 1967, The Doors frontman Jim Morrison was making out with a female fan backstage when a police officer told them to move along.

Frustrated that the officer didn’t recognize him, Morrison snapped back, and ended up with a face full of mace. Once he made it to the stage, Morrison started taunting the police officer, which led to him being arrested onstage. This then caused a riot.
Courtney Love’s Warning
Hole frontwoman Courtney Love is not someone to be messed with. The singer and former wife of Kurt Cobain lost her temper when a fan held up an image of her deceased spouse at a performance in Brazil in 2011.

Love told the person she would have them removed if they continued to show the image. This isn’t the first time Courtney Love has lost her temper in response to images of Cobain. In 1995, she ranted at an audience member who accused her of killing him.
Iggy Pop’s Glass Shards
Much like Alice Cooper, musician Iggy Pop pioneered his own form of outlandish onstage antics. What else would you expect from the “Godfather of Punk?” Interestingly, Iggy Pop was one of the first people to do a stage-dive, and is credited with popularizing it.

It’s difficult to find an image of Iggy Pop actually wearing a shirt, because the artist is known for performing bare-chested. This makes the fact that he’s known for rolling around in glass shards even more alarming.
Kanye West’s Infamous Interruption
How could we talk about bizarre onstage antics without mentioning rapper and fashion designer Kanye West? Like many other people on this list, West has a history of making impulsive and outlandish decisions. Back in 2005, the rapper shocked viewers when he went off-script during a telethon for Hurricane Katrina and started sharing his own political views.

Four years later, the rapper jumped on stage at the 2009 VMAs to interrupt Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech. Famously, this spawned the meme, “Imma let you finish.”
Ira Louvin’s Smashed Mandolins
Let’s jump back in time a little and take a look at an early instrument smasher. Ira Louvin was one half of The Louvin Brothers, a country duo that popularized singing in close harmony. Together, the Louvin Brothers sang country tunes, as well as Baptist gospel music.

Despite their songs warning of the consequences of sin, Ira Louvin was known for his short temper. When Ira came across a mandolin that was out of tune, his response was to simply smash it.
Kate Bush’s Water Tank
English singer-songwriter Kate Bush has only ever been on one concert tour. In 1979 the “Wuthering Heights” singer embarked on “The Tour of Life” and ended up completely exhausted. On the tour, Bush wore the world’s first wireless headset, and incorporated mime, magic, and readings.

In 2014, Kate Bush announced a residency at the Hammersmith Apollo in London. The musician performed a song about a woman drowning from inside a water tank and almost ended up with hypothermia.
Trent Reznor’s Mud
Trent Reznor is an Academy Award and Grammy Award-winning movie composer, but he spent the 1990s fronting industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. The band is known for their creative live performances, where different musicians make up the band, leading to a different sound than on studio recordings.

At Woodstock in 1994, Reznor and Danny Lohner got into a mud fight before performing. The band is known for playing covered in mud, smashing their instruments, and getting into fights.
Marilyn Manson’s Chaos
Trent Reznor ended up signing Marilyn Manson to his label — a metal band named after serial killer Charles Manson, and blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe. Fronted by lead singer Marilyn Manson, the band is known for shocking antics on and off stage.

During his time, Marilyn Manson has shocked audiences and outraged the wider public. The singer has ironed a Nazi flag on stage, peed on his audience, and gotten into physical fights with his band. Recently, he faced serious allegations from ex-fiancée Evan Rachel Wood.
Judas Priest’s Harley Davidson
Though it’s certainly not as outlandish as the behavior of some people on this list, Judas Priest singer Rob Halford still got up to his own onstage antics. The band’s first singer used to ride a Harley Davidson motorcycle onto the stage when it was time for the encore.

Back in 1991, Rob Halford was cruising through the onstage mist on his Harley when he banged into a drum riser. This led to considerable injury, but Halford played the set before heading to the hospital.
GWAR’s Bodily Fluid Sprays
Heavy metal band GWAR is known for their outrageous stage costumes, and design their live shows based on elaborate sci-fi mythology. The band’s onstage antics include over-the-top stunts, such as spraying the audience with a mixture of fake bodily fluids.

The band’s grotesque costumes are fashioned out of foam latex, polystyrene and hard rubber, but leave much of the band’s bodies bare. The band’s signature sprays are made from water and powdered food coloring, or a seaweed extract for a thicker texture.
Ritchie Blackmore’s Broken Guitars
We have another guitar smasher on our hands, and this time it’s Deep Purple and Rainbow member Ritchie Blackmore. The guitarist and songwriter was known for his bad temper, which often led to trouble on and off stage.

Ritchie Blackmore is known for attacking cameramen, and destroying both his own and other band members’ instruments. In 1974, during a performance in California, the musician destroyed multiple guitars and amps during a solo. Surprisingly, the ill-tempered guitarist is a big fan of ABBA.
Jerry Lee Lewis’s Flaming Piano
Another controversial musician with a reputation for onstage theatrics is Jerry Lee Lewis. The musician is considered one of the most influential pianists of the 21st century, but he’s perhaps more well-known for marrying his 13-year-old cousin.

Jerry Lee Lewis was known for destroying pianos, but the most famous anecdote about the entertainer is that he set his piano on fire at a performance in 1958. Indeed, in biopic Great Balls of Fire, Dennis Quaid recreates the famed incident (bottom left).
GG Allin’s Poop
We’ve had some truly disgusting and outrageous onstage antics so far, but punk musician GG Allin might be the most extreme of all. In 1985, the musician first pooped on stage, and caused a riot when his shocked fans ran for the door. This was the first of many times such a thing happened.

Even more shocking, GG Allin was known for consuming his own poop during shows. The artist was willing to do anything to shock crowds, including self-mutilation and attacking members of the audience.
Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Socks
Funk and punk rockband the Red Hot Chili Peppers is one of the best-selling bands of all time. That’s why it’s extra amusing that the band spent quite a few years performing entirely in the buff.

In 1988, the band posed completely naked, wearing just socks on their private parts. After that, the Red Hot Chili Peppers regularly performed in the buff. Bassist flea is particularly fond of performing nude, and has been arrested for obscenity for doing just that.
Maynard James Keenan’s Choke Hold
Rockband Tool has sold over 13 million albums in the US, and is fronted by the mysterious Maynard James Keenan. The singer-songwriter leads a reclusive life, and has even removed stalkers from his property by shooting them with a paintball gun.

Maynard James Keenan is a keen Brazilian Ji-Jitsu practitioner, and once used his skills to keep a fan at bay (pictured, bottom left). When someone ran on stage while Tool was performing, Keenan put them in a chokehold for 10 minutes while he sang.
M.I.A.’s Flipped Finger
And here we have British Sri Lankan entertainer M.I.A. The “Paper Planes” singer performed at the 2012 Super Bowl half-time show along with Madonna. Rather than cussing during the show, the rapper decided to flip her finger instead.

Alas, this resulted in multiple complaints from viewers, and the NFL suing the artist for not complying with their standards. In response, M.I.A. claimed that she was displaying female empowerment “through being punk rock.”
R. Kelly’s Imaginary Scene Partner
Dramatic documentary series Surviving R. Kelly revealed that American singer R. Kelly has been accused of very serious crimes. Prior to that, the singer has produced and performed some rather strange songs. For example, “Trapped in the Closet” is an opera that has 33 chapters, all released between 2005 and 2012.

At a 2005 performance, R. Kelly acted out all of the roles of the song. This meant that the musician fought with himself, and kissed an invisible figure. Thanks, but no thanks.
Elton John’s Bad Mood
When discussing Elton’s John’s onstage antics, we’re not exactly talking about lasers and giant bubbles. Nope — Sir Elton is known to have a bit of a temper, and this is especially true when someone bothers him onstage.

Back in 2018, the singer was performing “Million Dollar Piano” at his Las Vegas residency. During this song, the musician usually invites fans onstage, but this time, it didn’t go so well. One fan kept tapping John on the shoulder as he played, prompting him to storm off stage.
Billie Joe Armstrong’s Smashed Guitar
The members of Green Day are no strangers to wild onstage antics. Back in 1994, the band performed at legendary music festival Woodstock and ended up coated in mud after the crowd starting throwing clods of dirt. This worked wonders for the band’s image, and propelled them further up the chart.

In 2012, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong lost his temper when the band wasn’t given time to finish their performance. The musician ranted, smashed his guitar on stage, and stormed off. Reportedly, he checked into rehab the next day.
